Electric Downhill Mountain Bikes Are Coming: Do You Really Need a €14,999 R20?

A downhill bike does not need a motor to go downhill. The problem starts when the run is over. Without a lift or shuttle, getting a true DH bike back to the top is usually slow, difficult, or simply impractical. That is the problem the Nicolai x Gamux R20 MGU is designed to solve.

With 200 mm of travel, mixed wheels, high-pivot suspension, a Pinion motor gearbox unit and an 800 Wh battery, the R20 is essentially a downhill bike that can shuttle itself back uphill. It weighs 29.5 kg and costs €14,999. That makes the R20 one of the clearest examples yet of a true electric downhill mountain bike.

"But it also raises a more useful question: How much technology do riders actually need to solve the self-shuttle problem?"

What Pinkbike Riders Are Really Saying

The reaction to the R20 was not simply, "e-DH makes no sense." Many riders understood the use case immediately: ride downhill, turn around, climb back up, and repeat without waiting for a chairlift or shuttle vehicle.

The strongest criticism focused elsewhere:

  • Weight: 29.5 kg is heavy.
  • Price: €14,999 is extremely expensive.
  • Drivetrain: The drivetrain is highly specialized.
  • Power: Some riders want more climbing power for faster self-shuttle laps.

That creates an interesting market signal. Riders may not be rejecting electric downhill bikes. They may be asking for a simpler and much more affordable one. This is where the 4LEAF Rocksoul becomes relevant.

Nicolai R20 MGU vs 4LEAF Rocksoul

The Rocksoul takes a different approach. Instead of an integrated gearbox and belt drive, it uses familiar MTB components around a Bafang M560 motor, a large removable battery and a long-travel gravity chassis.

The current FOX build uses a 203 mm FOX 40 Factory fork, with rear travel configurable around 190, 200 or 212 mm. It also supports both 29-inch and mullet wheel configurations.

Note: The motor numbers should not be treated as a direct laboratory comparison. Pinion and Bafang use different rating conventions. What matters here is simpler: Rocksoul provides a full-power eMTB system without requiring an integrated gearbox drivetrain.

The Geometry is Surprisingly Close

Price aside, the two bikes are much closer geometrically than many riders might expect. The R20 has a 63.3° head angle. Rocksoul sits at 63°. The R20 reaches 500 mm in its largest size. Rocksoul R3 is 502 mm. Rocksoul's 1335 mm wheelbase is also essentially in modern downhill territory.

The biggest differences are in the rear center, stack and seat angle. The R20 uses a 462 mm rear center, compared with 455 mm on Rocksoul. That should give the R20 a more planted, race-focused balance at high speed. Rocksoul's shorter rear end should feel more active and easier to move around on freeride lines and tighter terrain.

For pure race stability and long seated climbs, the Nicolai geometry is more specialized. For riders who want a mix of DH, freeride and long-travel gravity riding, Rocksoul offers a slightly less extreme platform.

Rocksoul is Not Just an Enduro Bike with a Longer Fork

There are already many very capable 170 to 180 mm e-Enduro bikes.

So simply adding more travel is not enough to create a true 200mm travel electric mountain bike. Rocksoul starts with a gravity-oriented chassis: 63° head angle, 1300 to 1335 mm wheelbase, 203 mm dual-crown fork and up to roughly 212 mm of rear travel.

The suspension analysis also shows that the frame was designed around more than travel numbers:

  • Anti-squat: Remains relatively high through the early part of the travel, then drops as the suspension moves deeper. That gives the bike useful drivetrain support when climbing and accelerating.

  • Anti-rise: Starts high and decreases through the stroke. This helps support the chassis under braking while allowing the rear suspension more freedom deeper in the travel.

  • Leverage ratio: Drops from roughly 4.15 to 2.33. That is a strongly progressive curve, giving room for initial sensitivity while building support and bottom-out resistance.

These numbers do not prove that Rocksoul has a better suspension system than the R20.

They do show that it was designed as a genuine long-travel gravity platform.

Where the R20 Still Wins

The R20's high-pivot suspension remains one of its clearest technical advantages. A more rearward axle path can help the rear wheel move through repeated square-edge impacts at speed. The Pinion gearbox also removes the conventional rear derailleur and moves more drivetrain mass toward the center of the bike.

For a rider focused entirely on DH race performance and sophisticated drivetrain integration, the R20 has a stronger technical package.

But those advantages come with a very large price premium. Rocksoul accepts a more conventional drivetrain in exchange for lower cost, easier servicing and familiar replacement parts.

The Real Value of an e-DH Motor

A motor does not make you descend better. Its value appears at the bottom of the trail. Traditional downhill riding often depends on a chairlift, truck, driver, opening hours or a long push back uphill. A full-power Bafang M560 electric mountain bike changes that equation.

"For self-shuttle riding, the important question is not simply battery capacity. It is: How many downhill laps can you fit into the day?"

The $6,999 Question

The R20 costs €14,999 (equals to $17,395).

The FOX-equipped Rocksoul costs $6,999 (M510 version at $6,899).

These are different currencies and market conditions, so this should not be treated as a simple percentage comparison. But the difference is large enough to change the buying decision. The R20 buyer is paying for a gearbox, belt drive, high-pivot suspension architecture, boutique manufacturing and a highly integrated engineering package.

The Rocksoul buyer gets a simpler machine: 203 mm FOX 40, up to 212 mm rear travel, Bafang M560, approximately 835 Wh and a gravity-focused chassis. The better question is:

How much of the actual downhill riding experience requires the expensive parts?

Rocksoul Still Has One Major Problem

Weight. Rocksoul currently weighs around 30 kg. The R20 weighs 29.5 kg. So Rocksoul should not be marketed as a lighter R20. It is not. Reducing Rocksoul toward 27 to 28 kg while keeping the 203 mm fork, large battery and gravity durability would materially strengthen the product.

If a future version could move toward 25 to 27 kg, the proposition would become much harder to ignore. For now, Rocksoul's advantage is not weight. It is price, simplicity, serviceability and configuration flexibility.

Do You Really Need an R20?

For some riders, yes. If you want Pinion MGU integration, belt drive, high-pivot suspension and a highly specialized race-derived machine, the R20 offers something genuinely unusual.

But the R20 may have done something even more important. It proved that a self-shuttle electric downhill mountain bike makes sense. Once that idea is accepted, the next question becomes obvious: What does the more affordable version look like?

Rocksoul offers one possible answer: 63° gravity geometry. 203 mm FOX 40. Up to approximately 212 mm rear travel. 29-inch or mullet compatibility. 720/835 Wh battery. Bafang M560. $6,999 FOX build.

The R20 shows how far e-DH engineering can go when price is not the first constraint. Rocksoul asks a simpler question: How much e-DH bike do you actually need to ride more downhill?
